Current Students FAQ

If you don't find an answer to a question here, please download our info pac or contact the SE program to request more information.

Where will classes be held next year?

Starting with the Fall semester in September 2004, classes will be held on the U of M East Bank, in the EE/CS building on Washington and Union. This will give us access to the research facilities of the new Software Engineering Center, the Computer Science and Engineering department, the Digital Technology Center, and to the public and grad student lab facilities. We will also be close to the Science and Engineering Library in the Walter Library building, Coffman Union, Northrup Auditorium, the gym and natatorium, and other University facilities.

Will we be able to use the gym and other recreational facilities?

You can get a grad student membership for something around 60$/semester. See the recreational sports site for details.

Will there be any changes in services?

The current level of student services is not expected to change, except that we will no longer serve lunch on Saturdays. There are a large number of dining establishments within easy walking distance of both the EE/CS building and Gateway Center, both on campus and in the "Stadium Village" area along Washington Avenue and Oak St.

Other services should not change. We will still provide morning snacks, and we will continue to process as much of your University paperwork as possible.

How will this change affect 2nd year students?

For the Class of 2004, there should be no visible changes, unless you fail to complete your Plan B project by the end of June 2004. After that time, the phone number of the student services office will most likely change, and we will no longer use WBOB for meetings or Plan B project presentations.

Where will I park?

Parking will be available in the East River Road Garage, south of Coffman Union on East River Road and just south of Washington Ave. It is an easy 4 blocks or so from the Huron St. freeway exit on 94, and 2 blocks from the EE/CS building. There is a tunnel from there to just across the street from the EE/CS building.

Will there be a tuition increase next year?

For the Class of 2005, we expect to roll back tuition by the amount we are currently paying for your catered lunches. You can eat nicely almost anywhere along Washington Ave. for about half the cost of a catered lunch. For the incoming Class of 2006, there will probably be an increase of less than 5%, but the final decision has not been made.

Will this change affect the MSSE curriculum or electives?

Not immediately, but that is one of the areas where we hope this move will help.

Who can I talk to for more information?

John Collins will be heading the transition effort, and he is your best source of information. This list will be updated from time to time as questions become frequently asked.
